Just when you thought you’ve heard of everything folks! I wasn’t planning on posting anything this soon, as I’m currently working on a piece about true crime against people with disabilities. However, today I stumbled upon a story that completely flipped my expectations of who might be involved in criminal activity. It turns out this incident actually occurred back in May 2020, but it was new to me and I felt compelled to share it because it underscores a powerful message about the human spirit.

During our usual YouTube watching, my husband and I came across a report about this surprising event. The channel was covering the attempted robbery of a jewelry store by a 19-year-old man living in Brazil. This individual had cerebral palsy, was also mute and deaf. What made this case so remarkable was how he attempted the crime: security footage showed him in his power wheelchair using his feet to hold a fake gun and aim it at the store merchant! He even had a note demanding that the employee not cause a scene or call the police. Ultimately, a passerby noticed the unfolding events and alerted emergency services, leading to the teenager’s arrest.

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking: why am I, on “wheelchair detective,” highlighting an attempted crime from almost five years ago committed by someone with a disability? Exactly! Even though this event happened in May 2020, it only came to my attention today, and it immediately struck me as a powerful example. It serves as a potent reminder that you truly can never judge a book by its cover. It underscores the fact that the human spirit and determination exist in everyone, regardless of physical abilities. We should never underestimate what someone might be capable of, whether it’s overcoming challenges or, as this story surprisingly illustrates, even attempting to break the law.
